Social and Behavioural Sciences and Evaluations

Supporting ethical review of social, behavioural and evaluation research that improves understanding of people, systems and outcomes.

What are social, behavioural science and evaluation studies?

Social and behavioural science research seeks to understand how individuals and communities think, act and interact. These studies may involve surveys, interviews, observational methods or behavioural interventions and often explore social, cultural, psychological or policy-related questions. While typically non-invasive, they require careful consideration of privacy, consent and participant wellbeing.

Evaluation studies assess the design, implementation or impact of a specific program, service or policy. Evaluation activities may involve participant recruitment, data collection and analysis. Where evaluations extend beyond routine quality assurance or involve risks to participants, independent ethical review may be required.

Does my study need ethical review?

Having the appropriate ethical oversight is important to ensure that your study respects participant data, and that risks and benefits are considered.

The level of risk, in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2025), determines the appropriate level of ethical review for each project. As part of our triage process, we assess study risk and offer a Low and Negligible Risk (LNR) review pathway where the relevant criteria are met.

Not all projects require HREC review. Studies with more than a low level of risk must be reviewed by an HREC. Some low-risk or quality assurance activities may follow other pathways or be exempt. Refer to the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research for details, or see our Review Pathways guide.
