Animal Health Studies

Supporting the ethical and responsible conduct of animal research through independent review, scientific rigour and a commitment to animal welfare.

Animal studies play an important role in advancing scientific knowledge and improving health outcomes for both humans and animals. They are often a critical step in the development of new therapies, medicines and medical technologies, providing valuable insights that help inform future clinical research.

About Animal Studies

Animal research encompasses a broad range of scientific disciplines, including biomedical research, pharmacology, toxicology, veterinary medicine and translational science. Studies involving animal models, such as mice and rats, may be undertaken to:

• Better understand disease processes and biological mechanisms
• Evaluate the safety and efficacy of potential new therapies
• Investigate the effects of medicines and medical interventions
• Support the development of treatments that may progress to human clinical trials
• Advance animal health and veterinary care

While alternatives to animal research continue to evolve, animal studies remain an important component of some areas of scientific and medical research.

Bellberrys Animal Ethics Committee (AEC)

Bellberry Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) provides independent, rigorous scientific and ethical review of animal research in accordance with the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes.

Our AEC reviews studies involving both animal and human health research applications, including pharmacology and toxicology studies involving animal models such as mice and rats. These studies often represent a critical stage in the research and development pathway, generating evidence that may underpin subsequent clinical trials involving human participants.

Bellberry’s review process ensures that proposed research is:

• Scientifically justified and methodologically sound
• Ethically conducted and independently reviewed
• Designed to minimise pain, distress and harm
• Undertaken with the highest standards of animal welfare

Our Commitment to Reducing Animal Use

Bellberry is strongly committed to reducing the incidence of animal testing in research and drug development whenever feasible. We focus on a range of activities including researching different models, and education on the alternatives and reduction of animal use.
This is further exemplified through our work in New Approach Methodologies (NAMs)

Not all projects require HREC review. Studies with more than a low level of risk must be reviewed by an HREC. Some low-risk or quality assurance activities may follow other pathways or be exempt. Refer to the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research for details, or see our Review Pathways guide.
