The role of a Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) is to ensure that all kinds of research involving or impacting on humans conform to the highest standards of ethical practice and academic integrity.  In this episode, Behind Closed Doors, we meet four members of Bellberry’s HRECs to understand what motivates people to take on this responsibility and how the process works.

The 2023 ARCS Annual Conference (6–8 June 2023) will be held at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Darling Harbour, Sydney. The ARCS Annual Conference brings together industry professionals, consumers, patients, practitioners, researchers and academia to unite, educate, inform and network.

On International Clinical Trials Day, we’re proud to publish the Bellberry Clinical Trial Activity Report for 2022. This annual publication represents over one third of the Australia wide CTN trial activity across the development lifecycle.

This report demonstrates capability and capacity in a broad range of research areas. It also captures the originating funding location for inward investment in Sponsored clinical trials, again demonstrating Australia’s active participation in the global development process.

In this reporting period Bellberry was also delighted to have been awarded full re-accreditation for five years by the global Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP). Bellberry is the only organisation to achieve AAHRPP accreditation reflecting Bellberry’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of research participants.

Last year, Bellberry launched a pilot grant program to support participant engagement at scientific meetings. Conference organisers were encouraged to apply for funding to create and/or enhance participant-centric programs, with the overarching goal of improving research by embracing the participant voice. Bellberry was thrilled to receive a larger-than-expected number of high-quality applications. Successful applicants were: The second round of this grant program is now open with a deadline of 10 March 2023. Applicants can apply for a minimum amount of $1,000 and up to a maximum of $20,000 (ex GST). Funds must be expended in the 2022/23 financial year. Bellberry is further developing guidance with respect to complex study designs (such as platform, adaptive and umbrella protocols), which includes how these applications are presented to our Committees for review.

Aligned to our purpose, the quality of a Bellberry Committee review is part of the foundation of our service. While we acknowledge complex study designs have many advantages, there are additional considerations for the management of these types of study designs, ultimately with the protection of participants in mind.

Speakers and delegates at the Health Services Research Conference 2022 are invited to delve into the inter-related themes of resilience, innovation and value, and the role of health services research in embedding these principles into our health systems.

The conference will bring together a variety of disciplines including medicine, allied health, nursing, health policy, health economics, public health, health promotion, epidemiology, informatics and sociology to share how research can help build and maintain resilience, innovation and value within health systems.
